16. “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
This phrase from the 1975 movie “Jaws” was famously uttered by Roy Schneider when his character, Police Chief Martin Brody, finally sees the great white shark he has been hunting for the first time. Since then it has become a catchphrase for anytime anything goes wrong. According to co-writer Carl Gottlieb, the line originated from a real-life problem on the set. The producers were very stingy, and the barge they had brought in to carry all the lights and equipment was steadied by a tiny support boat that was too small for the job. Everyone kept telling them ‘You’re gonna need a bigger boat’, and it became a catchphrase for the entire crew.
